Personal hygiene is important for feeling good, comfortable and clean, good personal hygiene means the reduction of body odor which can be unpleasant, so in my work I try and make sure that my residents are clean and comfortable when I have got them ready.
2. Describe the effects of poor personal hygiene on health and well-being?
There are many effects that can come from not maintaining good standards of hygiene. Residents could feel upset, unclean and have a body odor that they are not happy with which would not be good for their well being.
Know how to support an individual to maintain personal hygiene
1. Identify factors that contribute to good personal hygiene?
• Washing the body daily
• Brushing teeth
• Washing of dirty clothes
• Washing hair regularly
• Cleaning finger nails and toe nails
• Putting on clean clothes and underwear
• Regular cleaning of the ear buds
• Washing hands after using the toilet
• Washing hands before eating and after eating
2. Explain how to support the preferences and needs of the individual while maintaining their independence?
Whilst assisting and individual with their personal hygiene I try to be sensitive and avoid personal remarks, I listen to the individual how they like thing to be done and take into account their wishes and choices. I speak in a way the individual understands and give them time to answer and walk. I try to provide with information in a calm and sensitive way. There are many ways of maintaining good personal hygiene as a carer I have duty to encourage individuals to keep clean.
3. Describe how to maintain dignity of an individual when supporting intimate personal hygiene?
When I support an individual in the bathroom or when I’m supporting an individual with a shower, I always close the windows and doors as I always want to keep their dignity and respect. By making sure individuals put on a dressing gown or wear clothes before coming out the bathroom also maintains their dignity and respect.
4. Describe risks to own health in supporting personal hygiene routines?
As I support individuals to do a wide range of personal hygiene risks I am at risk of infection. I assist individuals with their washing, showering, dressing, toileting. If I do not follow Kingston Court policies and procedure, I put myself and others in danger.
5. Describe how to reduce risks to own health?
To minimize the risks to my health whilst supporting a resident it is important that I read the resident care plan so I am aware what I need to do. I need to read the individual risk assessments. It is important that the resident is happy and that there are no obstacles in the way for me to carry out my work. I must use the PPE provided and the equipment like I was trained .If I have any problems will speak to my manager.
6. Identify others that may be involved in supporting an individual to maintain personal hygiene.
When a resident arrives at Kingston Court a full care plan and risk assessments are done by the nurse on duty to find out what the resident requires with personal hygiene. Other people involved would be the carers, family members and even the GP.
Understand when poor hygiene may be an indicator of other underlying personal issues
1. Identify underlying personal issues that may be a cause of poor personal hygiene?
The resident may not have enough money to buy toiletries for personal hygiene or they may be unwell and haven’t felt like keeping up with their washing of themselves and clothes.
2. Describe how underlying personal issues might be addressed?
If the resident has financial issues then social services can assist them and they can receive the help they need. If it’s health issues maybe the GP would be involved to get them the right help.
Know how to encourage an individual to maintain personal hygiene
1. Explain how to address personal hygiene issues with an individual in a sensitive manner without imposing own values?
When addressing an individual about personal hygiene issues I would do so in a calm way. Speaking clearly and calmly, not making a big deal about it. If the resident was ill it would be up to the staff to attend the individual’s hygiene needs and assess what they needs have. The staff needs to take into account the individuals preferences and culture. In this situation I must ensure I do not put my personal experiences on the individual and respect their decisions on how they wish to be cared for.
2. Describe how to make an individual aware of the effects of poor hygiene on others?
