Finally, wouldn’t you want to leave your child’s looks, personality and identity to chance and for them to decide? Firstly, parents shouldn’t be allowed to choose the genetic make-up of their children because who would want to live in a world where everyone is the same? If every child was genetically engineered, no one is going to have individual qualities that make them unique. Everyone is going to be attractive, fit and get A’s all round. Everyone will be comparing themselves to each other to see who has been genetically engineered better, for instance in the movie Gattaca, Irene gets Jerome (Vincent) tested to see if he was just as good as he is made out to be. She also wanted to find out if he was too good (genetically engineered) for her.
The real Gerome even quoted to Vincent my eyes are prettier”. In the film all the genetically engineered actors/actresses were dressed in grey or black suits and all looked very similar; to show they are all basically the same. Furthermore, parents shouldn’t be allowed to choose the genetic make-up of their children because there would be no surprises. If parents could choose the genetic make-up of their child, the 2043 tennis Australian Open champion would have been decided in 2013.
The child might not even like the destiny their parents chose for them when they were still in their mummy’s tummy, but they would still have to live the dream that is not even there’s. For example, in the movie Gattaca the real Jerome was genetically engineered to be an Olympic gold medallist in the sport of swimming, but Jerome did not enjoy or even like swimming but he was made to do it. Jerome then competed in the Olympics and he got a silver medal, he was clearly not satisfied because he was genetically engineered to win, this loss made Jerome depressed and he ended up attempting suicide because of it You know I wasn’t drunk when I walked in front of that car. I stepped right out in front of it. I’d never been more sober in my life. I couldn’t even get that right could I? If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again!” – Gerome.
Lastly, parents shouldn’t be allowed to choose the genetic make-up of their children because shouldn’t the identity of a human being be chosen by themselves? Parents should defiantly not be allowed to choose the identity of their children because that’s one thing that every human being should choose for themselves. Parents shouldn’t be able to choose the career their child will have, what happens if they hate basketball and they were genetically engineered to be a professional basketball player? Or they just can’t stand feet and they are genetically engineered to be a podiatrist? In the film Gattaca, Vincent’s parents were talking to the Geneticist about genetic engineering.
The parents asked the Geneticist Don’t you think we should leave some things up to chance?” Referring to what their kid looks like and what leisure activity they will enjoy. The Geneticist replied You want to give your child the best possible start. Believe me; we have enough imperfections built in already.
The child doesn’t need any additional burdens. Keep in mind this child is still you, simply the best of you. You could conceive naturally a thousand times and never get such a result.” In conclusion, parents should not be allowed to choose the genetic make-up of their children for any reason because who would want to live in a world that everyone acts, talks and looks the same in? There would never be any surprises because the parents will know what the child will succeed in before there even born and finally you cannot chose the career of your child for them.
